This is…what…the third time someone’s quit or been fired fromĪ Star Wars movie project in the last 4 years? STICKMAN: God damn the Disney era of Star Wars has beenĪ messy one. Maybe Rian Johnson’s new trilogy will play a bigger role in the universe!! So many questions, so little answers, Star Wars is lowkey a mess right now and, quite frankly, I am happy to see it being put on hiatus after “Rise of Skywalker.” So, maybe Benioff and Weiss weren’t ready. It also doesn’t help that, shortly before this news dropped, a live-tweeted thread of their panel at the Austin Film Festival showcased how largely unprepared and initially unqualified they were to tackle the series, calling the show an “expensive film school.” Does this directly have to do with their firing? Probably not, but it sure is funny. The last season of “Game of Thrones” garnered massive backlash from fans and critics alike, almost undoing seven seasons of success. Did this happen with Benioff and Weiss? Maybe. Many believe these episodes indicate a lack of creative freedom under the Lucasfilm umbrella, though many counter that with the fact that Kennedy is an incredibly talented producer who has helmed some of the most well-known films of all-time, so maybe she knows what she’s doing? After all, Trank and Trevorrow both garnered reputations of being messy filmmakers with big egos and not enough talent to back it up. And, of course, we all remember the Lord & Miller debacle that largely phased the reputation of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” with hardcore fans. Josh Trank and Colin Trevorrow both had SW projects being worked on until they suddenly parted ways. And it’s a whole mess of things.įor starters, this isn’t the most high profile departure we’ve seen in the Star Wars universe. However, as the internet tends to do, many suspect deeper causes to be at fault here. They cite this as the core reason why they are leaving the project, and producer Kathleen Kennedy, in her statement, seems to be very open to working with them in the future.
